If running as administrator doesn’t help you could try resetting the app. Go to NotePad but do not open it, instead press Shift F10 and go to App Settings and tab to Reset.

this didn’t fix anything

Cleaning the registry with CCleaner may help, if not Windows 11 has a feature that lets you repair problems without losing your apps and files but that may take a while. If you need to do it go to System, Recovery and choose the second option.

this did not fix it either

That is just weird. I never had an issue like that. When did you first notice it?

a few days ago: originally I didn’t think it was an issue because elten’s text reader works fine: then there was the problem of opening py files, log files, and ini files, and it got a bit worrying

Check the Microsoft Store to see if there is an update for NotePad, not sure if that will fix it though.

I did that

Maybee run cmd as admon, and type sfc/scannow

I did that as well

If you are still having the issue, you may have to reset your PC but you can still keep your files.

Dylan,
Maybe you won’t need to reset your PC after all. I just remembered, I had almost the same issue with Microsoft Office 2007. I was able to fix it by deleting the database but I never have seen the issue with NotePad. I’m not sure where NotePad stores its data though. -
This is a very serious problum, you may nead to use the dism utilaty to fix this, if that does not work, this is a big big problum with your computer.
